Supercomputer Predicts New Masters Champion as McIlroy Faces Tough Defence
A supercomputer has delivered a stark prediction for the 2026 Masters Tournament, forecasting that Rory McIlroy will fail to retain his title at Augusta National. The advanced computational model projects American golfer Bryson DeChambeau will emerge victorious, dealing a significant blow to McIlroy's hopes of back-to-back Green Jackets.
DeChambeau Tipped for Augusta Triumph
The Action Network supercomputer has analyzed player data and course conditions to predict DeChambeau will overcome his past struggles at Augusta and secure his first Masters victory. According to the projection, DeChambeau is expected to finish at 13-under-par with a two-shot lead, giving him a 31.1 percent probability of winning the prestigious tournament.
DeChambeau, a two-time US Open champion who won that major in 2020 and 2024, has previously experienced difficulties at Augusta National. Last year, he slipped from second place to joint-fifth after a challenging final round. However, the supercomputer suggests he has learned from those experiences and is now positioned for success.
McIlroy's Projected Struggle
Rory McIlroy, who completed his career Grand Slam in dramatic fashion last April by defeating Justin Rose in a playoff, faces a challenging defence according to the supercomputer's analysis. The 36-year-old Northern Irishman is predicted to finish tied for seventh place at six-under-par, a full seven shots behind the projected winner.
The model assigns McIlroy just a 3.3 percent chance of victory, placing him alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Xander Schauffele in the projected standings. This comes despite McIlroy's historic triumph last year that ended his 11-year wait for a fifth major championship victory.
Complete Predicted Leaderboard
The supercomputer's comprehensive analysis provides a complete projected leaderboard for the 2026 Masters:
- 1. Bryson DeChambeau: -13 (31.1% win probability)
- 2. Ludvig Aberg: -11 (19.2% win probability)
- T3. Justin Rose: -9
- T3. Cameron Young: -9
- 5. Matt Fitzpatrick: -8
- 6. Scottie Scheffler: -7
- T7. Rory McIlroy: -6 (3.3% win probability)
- T7. Tommy Fleetwood: -6
- T7. Xander Schauffele: -6
- 10. Brooks Koepka: -5
Ludvig Aberg, who finished second at the Masters two years ago, is projected as DeChambeau's closest competitor with an 11-under-par score and a 19.2 percent chance of victory. Last year's runner-up Justin Rose is predicted to share third place with Players Championship winner Cameron Young, both at nine-under-par.
Player Perspectives Ahead of Tournament
McIlroy recently expressed admiration for world number one Scottie Scheffler's mental approach to golf, suggesting he sometimes envies his competitor's singular focus. "He seems to be of this mindset that whatever happens on the golf course happens and it doesn't make him any more or less of a man," McIlroy told Fried Egg Golf.
Meanwhile, DeChambeau has reflected on his previous Masters experiences and expressed confidence in his current preparation. "There's always passion here, whenever I'm trying to win a tournament," DeChambeau said. "Been trying to win this event for quite a while and hopefully I've learned a lot of lessons."
The American golfer added: "I'll continue to learn more lessons this week, but hopefully my game is in the place where I can get it done this week."
As the action at Augusta National prepares to commence on Thursday, all eyes will be on whether the supercomputer's predictions prove accurate or if McIlroy can defy the odds to secure consecutive Masters victories.
