Six Man City Academy Stars Set to Shine on Asia Tour Under Maresca
Six Man City Academy Stars to Impress Maresca on Asia Tour

Manchester City's production line from academy to first team has been a huge success story over the past decade, with countless stars progressing to the top of the game. Phil Foden, Nico O'Reilly and Rico Lewis are the three who have established themselves at the Etihad, but plenty more are playing elsewhere in the Premier League and across Europe.

Academy Prospects to Impress New Manager

The Blues pride themselves on producing good players ready for first team football and good people ready for the journey ahead. This summer, several will get the chance to impress incoming manager Enzo Maresca, with City set to take a youthful squad on the tour of Asia.

The World Cup will rule out plenty of senior stars, with those in the latter stages unlikely to make the three-game trip to Hong Kong and South Korea. That will open the door to academy prospects to stake a claim and show Maresca what they can offer. We've taken a look at six youngsters who could be given their chance to shine.

Ryan McAidoo

The leading light of City's Under-18 side, the tricky winger played a key role in the Blues winning the competition with a victory over Manchester United. He has already made his senior debut for the Blues and impressed, scoring in the 10-1 FA Cup thumping of Exeter City in January. The 18-year-old arrived at City from Chelsea and has trained regularly with the first team. With Savinho the subject of transfer interest from Tottenham, a squad vacancy on the wing could open up and McAidoo may well have the opportunity to show Maresca that he could fill the void.

Oliver Whatmuff

The young goalkeeper starred for Rochdale on loan last season, playing a pivotal role in Dale earning promotion via the play-off final at Wembley having missed out on the title in dramatic fashion to York in the final minutes of the regular season. The 18-year-old proved himself more than capable at senior level and the experience of a full campaign as number one will have proved invaluable. The Blues could easily see James Trafford leave this summer and Whatmuff is a contender to replace the former Burnley man as second choice behind Gianluigi Donnarumma. That could prove too big a leap but the teenager will certainly have eyes on progressing into the City first-team setup in the near future and this summer affords him a chance to showcase his ability.

Teddie Lamb

The 16-year-old striker has been a scoring sensation in City's youth team and has made the headlines with his eye for goal, physical profile and natural ability. Lamb arrived from Leyton Orient a year ago in a high-profile move and has slotted seamlessly into the City setup. He still has work to do and a leap into the senior squad at this stage of his career is perhaps unlikely, but he could well be rewarded for a fine debut 12 months at the Etihad with a place in the tour squad this summer.

"He is one of the best players in terms of mentality that I have ever seen," said City Under-18 chief Oli Reiss, speaking to the Manchester Evening News in April. "A proper striker, I like him and he has a huge quality and potential and a big future, I think."

Harrison Miles

The central midfielder was a vital cog in a successful season for the Under-18s and has regularly trained with the senior team. City have high hopes for the 17-year-old, who joined the Blues from Southampton, and he will step up to Under-21 football next season. With question marks over the make-up of the City midfield next term, opportunities could arise for academy prospects and Miles will be keen to be at the front of the queue.

"You have to take those opportunities, and I've been up training with the first team as well, doing the matchday minus ones with them and even those are opportunities to impress the manager, which I feel like I've taken and given him an impression of what kind of player I am," he said, speaking to the Manchester Evening News earlier this year. "I'm waiting for the next opportunity and hopefully I can take that one as well."

Divine Mukasa

He signed a contract extension earlier this summer and is highly rated at the Etihad. The 18-year-old arrived at City from West Ham in 2023 and is seen as a player with first team potential. His showings in training and games, as well as his attitude and mentality, have seen the club extend his deal. The attacking midfielder could remain in the first team picture next season, but a loan switch is also a possibility if the right move is found that suits City, the player and the interested clubs.

Mukasa made his senior debut for City in the Carabao Cup win over Huddersfield last September and has gone on to make six appearances for the first team. He's represented England at age-group level and made 16 appearances on loan at Leicester last term in the Championship, scoring twice as the Foxes were relegated to League One.

Femi Fapetu

Perhaps flying a bit under the radar given the clutch of talent at City, the 18-year-old has impressed internally and is tipped for a bright future. Generally operating as a number six, although more than capable of playing further forward, the teenager joined City in 2021 having previously been in Arsenal's academy. His talent, game intelligence and versatility have caught the eye and a spot in the tour squad would further expose him to senior football.
