Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have reaped substantial financial rewards from the first season of TGL, the innovative golf competition they helped create. The duo, who conceived the tournament to modernise the sport, each earned a share of the prize money from their respective teams.
Atlanta Drive GC, comprising Billy Horschel, Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay and Lucas Glover, were crowned champions after defeating New York Golf Club in the Finals Series. They took home a total prize of £6.95 million ($9 million) to be split among the four players. New York Golf Club, featuring Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Cameron Young and Matt Fitzpatrick, received £3.48 million ($4.5 million) for their second-place finish.
Woods' team finished fifth in the overall standings, earning him £338,883 ($437,500) from the team's cut. McIlroy, who recently won The Players Championship, earned £290,606 ($375,000) for his performances in the tournament.
The hybrid simulation format has divided opinion among golf purists, but participants have largely praised the experience. Billy Horschel, a member of the winning team, said: 'I think we all have had a lot of fun. It's just something new and exciting and we all enjoyed it.' Phil Mickelson, who was barred from competing due to his LIV Golf affiliation, also expressed support, stating: 'It could really be good for the game if it's compelling.'
