No Pulisic, No Problem: USA Win Without Star Player

Mauricio Pochettino faced a significant challenge when Christian Pulisic's calf injury ruled him out of the United States' World Cup match against Australia on Friday. Without his best player, the US head coach opted for a bold tactical shift, starting two strikers—Ricardo Pepi and Folarin Balogun—instead of the usual single forward. The gamble paid off handsomely as the US cruised to a 2-0 victory, securing their place in the knockout stage.

Two Strikers, Endless Opportunities

Australia entered the match with a point to prove, having opened their campaign with a win over Turkey. The Socceroos set up in a low defensive block with five defenders and a zonal marking scheme, a system that often frustrates teams relying on a lone striker. However, the US duo of Pepi and Balogun proved too much to handle.

“I feel like it opens up some spaces, of course, but it’s always good to be able to have two strikers,” Pepi said after his first World Cup start. “If the defenders are marking me, then the other is always free. So it’s a good thing that we were able to play like this, and it just shows what the team has.”

The chemistry between the players, built through years of playing together at youth and senior levels, was evident. The US looked well-rehearsed in their movement patterns, putting Australia's defense in two minds from the opening whistle.

Early Breakthrough

The US tested the Socceroos early, and in the 11th minute, they forced an own goal—the second consecutive match in which they had done so. Antonee Robinson, receiving a pass from Tim Ream, spotted Balogun making a run behind the defense. With Pepi occupying the center-backs, Balogun had space to attack.

“I could see that he was looking to run the space in behind, so I just kind of played it down the channel for him,” Robinson said after the match. Balogun drove toward goal, and under pressure from Cameron Burgess, the Australian defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

“I want to be dangerous,” Balogun said. “I want to create opportunities, and it might not always be myself that scores, but if I can force an error that gives us the lead, then for me it’s like a goal as well.”

Second Goal Seals Victory

Pepi's presence in the box also contributed to the second goal just before halftime. As Robinson prepared to take a free kick, Australia's defense had to contend with three US center-backs and two strikers. Sergiño Dest collected the free kick and saw his shot deflect to Alex Freeman, who scored to make it 2-0.

Australia made three substitutions at halftime but failed to mount a serious threat. The US controlled the second half comfortably, with Pepi continuing to occupy defenders and press effectively. For Pepi, who was controversially left off the last World Cup roster, this start was a statement.

“It feels fluid,” Robinson said. “Everyone feels like they’re linking up really well, and hopefully we keep going with it.”
