Manchester City's first team trained in front of a large crowd at the Joie Stadium on Thursday afternoon during a 'City Are Back' event, which featured entertainment, interviews and activities for fans on the eve of the new season. The session took place in sweltering summer heat, with many children and families watching.
Haaland sits out finale
Erling Haaland, who returned from his post-World Cup break on Wednesday, was actively involved in the bulk of training but sat out the final few minutes, spending them in the centre circle while the squad completed their final drills. He did not appear to be limping as he left the pitch, and later returned to sign autographs and pose for pictures with fans.
Squad hint and young prospects
22 outfield players took part, including Claudio Echeverri and Jeremy Monga. Monga impressed in his cameo on tour and will hope to be part of the senior squad this season. Echeverri, 20, had two failed loan moves last season and caught the eye at the Club World Cup; he trained away from the main group for the final session, along with Monga and Kaden Braithwaite, suggesting none of the trio are in contention for the Community Shield.
Grealish and Reijnders updates
Jack Grealish, who missed the summer tour due to a foot injury, was back in the main group and took a full part in Thursday's session. The 30-year-old looks at full fitness but still seems set to depart before the window closes on September 1. Tijjani Reijnders, closing in on a move to Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah, came out with the squad but did not take part in the session, with an exit appearing imminent.
Maresca's relaxed mood
New boss Enzo Maresca took an active role in drills and shared a joke with Abdukodir Khusanov. He addressed the crowd after the session, along with record signing Elliot Anderson, and said his expectation is to win titles or at least challenge for trophies. City travel to Cardiff on Sunday for the Community Shield against Arsenal, then host Bournemouth at the Etihad on August 23.
