Bob MacIntyre surrendered a four-shot lead in the final round as world number one Scottie Scheffler produced a moment of magic to win the BMW Championship in Maryland. The Scot’s overnight advantage evaporated after two opening bogeys, and despite a spirited fightback, he could not stem the American’s momentum.
MacIntyre, who needed a win to secure his place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team, saw his lead cut to a single stroke after three holes. Scheffler drew level on the fifth after MacIntyre found a bunker, and moved two ahead on the 13th. A Scheffler bogey on the 14th reduced the gap, but the pivotal moment came on the 15th when MacIntyre missed a birdie putt while Scheffler converted.
The Oban man refused to give up, trimming the lead to one with a birdie at the 16th after a 265-yard second shot. However, Scheffler responded with a remarkable chip from the rough on the 17th to effectively seal victory. MacIntyre could not conjure more final-hole magic and signed for a three-over-par 73, finishing two shots behind Scheffler’s 15-under 265.
The victory was Scheffler’s 18th on the PGA Tour and fifth this year, making it the second consecutive season he has achieved that tally—a feat previously managed only by Tiger Woods. Tommy Fleetwood surged into a tie for fourth with a final-round 67, while England’s Harry Hall fell back to sixth after a 70. Rory McIlroy’s hopes were dashed by back-to-back double bogeys on the fifth and sixth, leaving him tied for 12th after a 70.
