Ibrahima Konate's Free Transfer to Real Madrid Confirmed by Club
Konate Joins Real Madrid on Free Transfer

Real Madrid have officially announced the signing of Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer from Liverpool, making him the third new arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu this week following Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva, as Jose Mourinho begins his second stint as head coach.

Konate's Move to Madrid

The French international, currently representing his country at the World Cup, will officially join Real Madrid on July 1 after agreeing to a four-year contract that keeps him at the club until June 30, 2030. A club statement confirmed the agreement, stating: "Real Madrid C. F. and Ibrahima Konate have reached an agreement for him to become a Real Madrid player for the next four seasons."

Liverpool Departure

Konate had appeared close to signing a new contract with Liverpool when former head coach Arne Slot indicated in April that only minor details needed to be finalized. However, shortly after the final day of the Premier League season, it was confirmed that the defender would leave the club. Konate posted a farewell message on Instagram, expressing his gratitude and sadness at not being able to say goodbye in person during the last match.

He wrote: "Representing this club has been an honour. We have shared incredible moments together… with highs and lows, trophies, challenges, lifelong friendships, and heartbreaking moments that will stay with us forever, none more painful than losing our brother Diogo. I am deeply saddened now that I didn’t get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game. At that moment, I didn’t know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I love you all and will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go."

Comparison with Alexander-Arnold Transfer

Konate's move marks the second consecutive summer that Liverpool has lost a key player to Real Madrid on a free transfer. A year ago, Trent Alexander-Arnold made a similar switch, but Liverpool received a £10 million fee from Madrid to expedite the transfer ahead of the Club World Cup. Alexander-Arnold went on to make his debut against Al-Hilal, playing over an hour in a 1-1 draw.

Will Liverpool Receive a Fee for Konate?

No. Unlike Alexander-Arnold's situation, Konate's transfer involves no fee. Madrid paid for Alexander-Arnold to ensure his availability for the Club World Cup, but with no such tournament this summer, there is no need to accelerate the deal. Konate will therefore complete his free transfer on July 1.
