Jackson Koivun carded a five-under-par 66 on Sunday to hold off a charging Scottie Scheffler and claim his first PGA Tour victory at the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota. The 21-year-old rookie finished at 25 under par, three strokes ahead of Scheffler, who closed with a 63.
Koivun's bogey-free finish
Koivun played the final two rounds without making a bogey, showcasing poise beyond his years. Less than two months ago, he helped Auburn win its second NCAA championship in three years. This was his third tournament since turning professional.
Scheffler made birdie on three consecutive holes to start the back nine in his bogey-free round. He added birdies at the 16th and 18th, pulling within two strokes. Koivun answered with a birdie at the 16th, extending his lead to three strokes with two holes to play.
Early surge
Koivun seized the lead over the final nine holes on Saturday and carried that momentum into Sunday. His approach shot on the first hole spun back to within two feet of the cup for an easy birdie putt. A birdie on the fourth hole pushed his lead to five strokes, with Scheffler among five golfers tied for second at the time.
Denny McCarthy (66), Brian Harman (65), Chandler Phillips (67) and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (64) tied for third at 20 under par. Jake Knapp shot an early 62 to climb the leaderboard and finish at 16 under, tied for 13th. Defending champion Kurt Kitayama (68) tied for 24th at 13 under.
