Thirty years ago, Europe achieved one of its most remarkable Ryder Cup victories on American soil at Oak Hill Country Club in New York. The 1995 triumph remains a standout moment, not least because it was secured with the help of Concorde, the supersonic jet that transported the team and their supporters across the Atlantic in style.
Europe arrived as underdogs, with captain Bernard Gallacher under pressure after narrow defeats in 1991 and 1993. He had initially resigned but was persuaded to return by a letter from Bernhard Langer, a conversation with Seve Ballesteros, and a public plea from Nick Faldo. Gallacher then faced a difficult task in selecting his team, with only two captain's picks. He chose Faldo and José María Olazábal, but Olazábal withdrew with a foot injury, allowing Ian Woosnam to join the squad.
The United States team was strong, featuring five rookies including Phil Mickelson and Tom Lehman. Captain Lanny Wadkins opted for experienced players Fred Couples and Curtis Strange as his picks, leaving out Open champion John Daly. The Americans were clear favourites with bookmakers at 1/2, while Europe were 15/8 outsiders.
On the first day, Europe struggled in the morning foursomes, losing two matches and halving one. However, a crucial putt from Langer on the 18th hole secured a half-point, leaving the score 2-2 after the first session. In the afternoon fourballs, Europe lost both matches, trailing 4-2 overnight.
The turning point came on Saturday. Europe won the morning foursomes 3-1, with Langer and Per-Ulrik Johansson defeating the American pair of Fred Couples and Davis Love III. In the afternoon fourballs, Europe continued their momentum, winning 2½-1½ to level the match at 8-8 heading into the final day.
On Sunday, Europe needed 6½ points from 12 singles matches to retain the cup. They delivered a stunning performance, winning 7½-4½ to secure a 14½-13½ victory. The win was celebrated as one of Europe's greatest away triumphs, with Concorde playing a symbolic role in uniting the team and their fans.
