LIV Golf Exodus: Hatton and Poulter Confirm Departure from Tour
Hatton and Poulter Confirm LIV Golf Departure

Two more stars have announced their departure from LIV Golf, as Tyrell Hatton and Ian Poulter both confirmed they will not continue on the breakaway tour. The duo are the latest big names to step away, following in the footsteps of major champions Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen.

Poulter has been a member of LIV since it launched in 2022, while Hatton signed up in 2024. Their exits raise serious questions about the future of the tour after cuts were made to the Saudi Arabia-backed project earlier this year.

Financial Troubles and Bankruptcy Protection

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund withdrew its financial support from LIV in April, having invested over $5bn (£3.8bn). In September, the league had to seek bankruptcy protection in the United States.

It has obtained a potential $300m (£224m) in funding from BC Partners Credit to attempt progression with 'LIV 2.0', yet only a small number of players have thus far pledged commitment to the proposed competition in 2027.

An eye-watering $45m (£33m) is owed to LIV players and they possess the right to depart, but it is being suggested that the arrangement provides an extension for the league to negotiate conditions. Those discussions remain active until Sunday, October 25, with players who previously signed long-term contracts not required to proceed with LIV 2.0, according to BBC Sport.

Poulter and Hatton Explain Their Decisions

Writing on social media, Poulter explained that he wants to help his two sons, Luke and Joshua, pursue professional careers, while also growing his YouTube channel. The 50-year-old said: "I wanted everyone to hear it direct from me that I have decided to not move forward with being part of LIV 2.0."

"Needless to say, it was a tough decision and one I thought about and discussed at length with my family and team. Ultimately, the opportunity to spend more time at home with my family, reduce international travel, focus on senior golf and have the opportunity to pursue other interests was something that I felt was right for me at this stage of my life and career."

Hatton also took to social media to explain the reason behind his departure. He said: "Wanted to confirm I will not be part of a LIV 2.0. A big thank you to everyone for their continued support. I am excited for what the next chapter of my career holds."

McKibbin Returns to DP World Tour

Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin, who only joined LIV in January 2025, said he planned to return to the DP World Tour and play its full schedule in 2027. "Joining LIV Golf was the right decision for me at the time, and I'm grateful for everything it has given me," the 23-year-old wrote. "I've taken time to think about what's best for me and I am confident this is the right decision to help me achieve my goals."
