Four players have left England's World Cup squad as the fallout continues over Thomas Tuchel's controversial selections. Alex Scott, Ethan Nwaneri, Rio Ngumoha, and Josh King, who were not named in the final 26-man squad, have departed the United States after playing in pre-tournament friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica.
Only Bournemouth's Scott was a genuine contender for the final cut, remaining on standby in case of a late injury. His omission was not considered controversial, and there has been little reaction to this group heading home.
However, the same cannot be said for more experienced players overlooked by Tuchel. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, and Cole Palmer were all left out, sparking strong reactions.
Maguire's Outburst
Manchester United's Maguire, a veteran of three major tournaments, lashed out on social media after his omission. He wrote: "I was confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players all the best this summer."
Maguire's family also weighed in. Wife Fern posted: "Beyond devastated for you. There was nothing else you could have possibly done to prove your worth. I don't need to tell you how admired you are, just a shame you were up against a single opinion." Mother Zoe fumed: "Absolutely disgusted. You couldn't have done any more. Hold your head high… Disgraceful."
Pundits and Former Players React
The absence of creative talents like Foden and Palmer, coupled with the inclusion of 35-year-old Jordan Henderson, has drawn criticism. Pundit Micah Richards said: "I don't agree with the squad because I would have had at least Phil Foden or Cole Palmer. In tournaments, you need moments of magic. Maguire is tried and trusted. Trent, I probably would have taken. The difference is Tuchel wants players who won't sulk. Henderson probably won't start, but players like Dan Burn, Djed Spence, Tino Livramento, and Ivan Toney know their roles. I understand why he did it, but I don't agree."
Former England defender John Terry also voiced displeasure, telling Piers Morgan Uncensored: "Harry Maguire should be there. He's a better player than Dan Burn. If John Stones gets injured, I'd rather have Maguire. He's a threat from set pieces. Luke Shaw is another one. We're looking at Nico O'Reilly at left-back; someone like him needs Shaw's experience. He's the future for upcoming World Cups."
Despite the noise, the four youngsters have left the Kansas camp, and England's World Cup squad is finalized.
