Jeremy Doku has signed a new contract with Manchester City that keeps him at the club until 2031, and the Belgian winger has vowed that his best is yet to come. The deal includes a 12-month extension option.
Doku is the latest City player to commit his future to the club this summer, following Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol and Abdukodir Khusanov, who have all signed extensions in recent weeks.
Standout season and return to training
Doku produced a standout campaign last term, scoring eight goals and delivering electrifying performances from the left-hand side. The 24-year-old returned to training this week after helping Belgium reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup and could feature in the Community Shield against Arsenal in Cardiff on Sunday.
The winger believes his breakout season can serve as a springboard for further improvement under new manager Enzo Maresca.
‘Unfinished project’
“I feel like last season was a good season. When you look at, we competed in almost four competitions,” Doku said. “We won two trophies, went far for the Premier League title and Champions League, we went out okay, but overall, it was a good season. So, I just want to try to win everything, be competing in every trophy again go as far as possible.”
“And on a personal note, I just want to do every year better, you know, so even grow more and be better. I don't know what that looks like, but like I said, I want to play my part and just be better than last season again.”
“You know what, I feel like compared to the other two seasons, more complete,” he said of last term. “From the start to the end, obviously there is always going to be bad games, but I was more involved. I played more; I was more efficient. And yeah, goals and assists.”
“I feel like when I look back there was still a lot of games where I could have scored or had an assist. But compared to the other two seasons there has been growth, positively, every season better.”
“I feel like I'm still an unfinished project and when I look back, I can be happy, but I feel like I look also forward to the next seasons and to the season that is going to come now. I'm looking forward also appreciating what I already achieved.”
Viana praise and City record
Director of Football Hugo Viana added: “Jeremy is a huge talent whose improvement since joining us in 2023 is clear for all to see.”
“He has a special dynamic. He has the right characteristics for what we are looking for in a winger. He really does bring a special quality to our team.”
“Jeremy is also a fantastic person. He is someone loved across the club. His attitude is first class, and he wants to improve every single day. He deserves this new deal, and I know he will continue his improvement in the coming months and years.”
Doku joined City from Rennes in 2023 for £55 million and has made 131 appearances for the Blues, scoring 22 goals.
