Charlie Woods, the 16-year-old son of golf legend Tiger Woods, saw his hopes of qualifying for the US Junior Ryder Cup team slip away after a final-round 74 at the Junior PGA Championship on Friday.
Woods entered the final day tied for second at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Indiana, following back-to-back 66s in rounds two and three. However, he stumbled over the closing stretch, recording three bogeys and a double bogey in his final 10 holes to finish in a tie for ninth at nine under par.
The Junior Ryder Cup is scheduled for 23-25 September at Bethpage Black and Nassau Country Club, preceding the senior event between the United States and Europe. While one captain's pick remains for the US team, Woods is not expected to be selected.
Lunden Esterline of Andover, Kansas, won the Junior PGA Championship with a dominant 19-under-par 266, including a second-round 62. Giuseppe Puebla shot a final-round 64 to tie for second at 13 under with Tyler Mawhinney, securing the other automatic qualifying spot for the Junior Ryder Cup.
Woods finished four strokes outside the qualifying positions, ending the week at nine under par, ten shots behind Esterline.
