Barry Ferguson has admitted he would love to see nephew Lewis Ferguson fulfil his dream of playing for Rangers, but believes the transfer fee is the biggest obstacle. The Bologna midfielder revealed earlier this week that Rangers showed interest in the summer, though no talks took place.
Contract and fee concerns
The 27-year-old Scotland international remains under contract with the Serie A side until 2028, meaning any move would require a significant fee. Writing for Record Sport, Barry Ferguson suggested a deal is unlikely unless Bologna reduce their valuation.
Speaking on Go Radio, he said: "That's one of his ambitions at some stage he will play for Rangers. Who knows when that will be, I would reckon Bologna will want a chunky transfer fee for him because I think he's still got two years left on his contract."
Fee could drop over time
Barry added: "Maybe one day, but I would love to see it myself. When that is who knows? I would imagine what would have been the stumbling block, would be the transfer fee, but as your contract runs down you know what happens with transfer fees they go lower."
"You never know, at some stage it might be doable for Rangers if that transfer fee is a bit lower than what I think Bologna would want for him at this moment in time."
Lewis's ambition remains
When asked about a potential £20m fee, Barry said: "Yeah, I would think they would be looking at that because of the length of his contract he's got left. Never say never hopefully one day in the future we'll see another Ferguson playing for Rangers."
Lewis, who was released as a schoolboy at Ibrox, said earlier this week: "I think one day. It's no secret I grew up a fan. That's absolutely no secret. My family is involved in the club. It was an aspiration of mine, a dream of mine as a kid and that's not changed."
"But you know, I don't want to speak about that while I'm still a player at Bologna - I've got too much respect for them. But yeah, in the future, you never know. It might happen, it might not. But it's always been something at the back of my mind."
