England begin their World Cup 2026 campaign against Croatia in a highly anticipated Group L fixture at the Dallas Stadium in Texas. The match marks the official tournament debut under manager Thomas Tuchel, with high expectations for the Three Lions. However, eagle-eyed fans may notice some kit discrepancies among the players.
Why Are Some England Players Wearing Different Shirts?
FIFA, in collaboration with American collectables brand Topps, has introduced an innovative 'World Cup Debut' patch system. Inspired by American sports memorabilia, the concept was created specifically for the expanded tournament. Players making their World Cup debut will wear a special patch on their shirt.
How the Patches Work
The physical patches are attached to the lower right sleeve of a player's shirt using an adhesive backing just before kick-off. They feature the word 'DEBUT FIFA WORLD CUP' printed underneath a gold World Cup 2026 graphic. Immediately after the final whistle, the removable stickers are stripped from the match-worn jerseys and later embedded into rare, premium Topps trading cards for fans and collectors.
Which England Players Wear the Patch?
Supporters will notice a distinct difference in the jerseys of 18 England players during this opening fixture. These tournament rookies, if they take to the field, will wear the special patches while their veteran team-mates will not. The list of debutants includes: Dean Henderson, James Trafford, Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Reece James, Ezri Konsa, Trevoh Chalobah, Nico O'Reilly, Jarell Quansah, Djed Spence, Elliot Anderson, Kobbie Mainoo, Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke, Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins. Chelsea defender Chalobah is a last-minute addition after replacing the injured Tino Livramento.
Experienced Veterans Without Patches
The eight remaining members of the 26-man squad will wear standard shirts because they have already played in a previous World Cup. These include Harry Kane, Jordan Pickford, John Stones, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford.
Next Fixtures
Following their opening clash against Croatia, England will face Ghana in their second group stage match on June 23. The Three Lions will then take on Panama.
