Yoane Wissa has publicly accused Brentford of reneging on a promise to allow him to leave the club this summer, as the transfer window enters its final hours. The striker, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, took to Instagram to insist the club had put the commitment in writing but has now ‘significantly changed its position’.
Newcastle United have been linked with a move for the 29-year-old, having seen a bid worth up to £40 million rejected. Brentford are now reportedly demanding £65 million for his services. Wissa’s potential departure could trigger a chain reaction, with Newcastle eyeing a replacement for Alexander Isak, who has been the subject of a £110 million offer from Liverpool.
Should Newcastle fail to land Wissa, they may turn to Wolves’ Jorgen Strand Larsen, after two bids – the second worth £55 million – were rejected. Wolves manager Vitor Pereira has stated he expects the Norwegian to stay. Meanwhile, Newcastle have already signed Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for £70 million, but manager Eddie Howe views him more as a number 10 than a traditional striker.
Howe acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Isak, who has refused to train or play, making the situation ‘untenable’. However, Newcastle’s Saudi owners may demand at least £130 million for the Sweden international. Brentford manager Keith Andrews has indicated he expects Wissa to remain part of his squad despite the public dispute.
