Xabi Alonso has been officially unveiled as Chelsea's new manager, signing a four-year contract that begins on July 1. In a significant shift, the Spaniard will carry the title of 'manager' rather than 'head coach', a distinction last held by Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge in 2013. This change signals the club's intention to grant Alonso greater control over off-pitch affairs, including transfer strategy.
Alonso's Appointment Marks New Era
The 44-year-old former Real Madrid boss succeeds Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed in April after just 23 games following a 3-0 defeat to Brighton. Interim head coach Calum McFarlane will oversee the final two Premier League matches of the season before Alonso takes the reins.
Alonso becomes the sixth permanent manager under BlueCo's ownership but the first to be given the elevated title. According to football.london, the club felt Alonso's outstanding track record warranted the change. He previously led Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season with an unbeaten campaign before joining Real Madrid last summer.
The club expects Alonso to play a central role in shaping Chelsea's summer transfer window, working closely with the board to identify recruitment targets. It is understood that Alonso shares a strong alignment of vision with Chelsea's ownership, which became apparent from their initial discussions.
Alonso's Vision for Chelsea
Speaking after his appointment, Alonso said: "Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies."
He added: "There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies."
Alonso's appointment represents a major statement of intent from Chelsea as they look to restore their status among English and European football's elite.
