Florian Wirtz Opens Up on Liverpool's Dressing Room Dynamics
Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz has provided an insightful look into how the team's dressing room played a pivotal role in reversing a disappointing spell of form earlier this season. The German international explained that a series of private meetings among players were crucial in addressing the issues that threatened to derail their campaign.
A Challenging Start to the Season
Liverpool entered the 2025-26 Premier League season as strong favourites to defend their title, having secured the championship under manager Arne Slot in his debut year. However, the team faced a significant setback between late September and November, losing six out of seven league matches. This poor run effectively ended their title hopes prematurely, putting pressure on the squad to regroup and refocus.
Since that difficult period, Liverpool have shown marked improvement, losing only three times in 23 games across all competitions. Wirtz attributes this resurgence to the collective efforts of the players, who took responsibility for holding each other accountable during the tough times.
Player-Led Meetings Foster Unity
"There were a few meetings in the changing room with only us players," Wirtz revealed. "We had a difficult start, and this club and this team was not used to this—that we don't win almost every game, you know? I think it was important to believe as a group that we are making progress and it needs to get better."
He emphasised the team's focus on giving fans something to cheer for, while maintaining a realistic outlook. "Us, as a team, we want to give the fans something, but we are not in the position to say: 'We are winning this or that'. So we focus on the games, but we know that there's still something to play for."
Wirtz's Personal Growth and Impact
For Wirtz, adapting to the Premier League after his £116 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen last summer was a challenge. It took him four months to score his first league goal, but since then, he has flourished, contributing 14 goals and assists in all competitions. He highlighted the mental aspect of his improvement, stating, "Most what I did was just to make myself strong in the head to bring myself to the best position to bring it on the pitch, and that helped also. It was really good to start scoring, and from then on it was easier to find the goal more."
Reflecting on the momentum in football, Wirtz added, "I can't even explain why because in football I think it's a lot of momentum, and when you score one time, then you can use it for yourself, you know."
Managerial Support and Future Prospects
Manager Arne Slot praised Wirtz's contributions after the midfielder broke his league duck in December, saying, "The team have seen how much he did already for us, creating chances and being so close to a goal. He will go on and score many more goals than one for us. I think Florian did more than only score today."
As Liverpool continue to build on their improved form, the insights from Wirtz underscore the importance of team cohesion and mental resilience in overcoming adversity. With silverware still within reach in other competitions, the Reds are determined to finish the season strongly, leveraging the lessons learned from their early struggles.
