Danny Welbeck reveals two Van Gaal decisions that forced his Man Utd exit
Welbeck reveals why he had to leave Manchester United

Former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck has opened up about the two decisive actions by then-manager Louis van Gaal that convinced him he had to leave Old Trafford. Welbeck, now starring for Brighton & Hove Albion, is set for an emotional return to his boyhood club this weekend.

The Beginning of the End Under Van Gaal

A local academy graduate and fan favourite, Danny Welbeck had established himself in the first team under Sir Alex Ferguson. He even managed to score nine Premier League goals during the turbulent single season under David Moyes, despite often being played out of position on the wing.

However, the arrival of the Dutch disciplinarian Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2014 signalled a fresh start for everyone at the club. Welbeck did not start any of United's first three league matches of the new era, appearing only as a substitute in two of them. It quickly became apparent he was not in Van Gaal's immediate plans.

The situation escalated in August 2014 when reports emerged that Van Gaal had informed the England international he was free to seek a transfer. The manager was publicly evasive, stating: "I know what I said to Danny and Danny knows exactly what I said to him."

The Final Straw: Falcao's Arrival

As the transfer deadline approached, Van Gaal delivered the knockout blow to Welbeck's United career. The club completed a sensational season-long loan deal for global superstar Radamel Falcao from Monaco.

For Welbeck, this was the unequivocal sign. With Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie already ahead of him, Falcao's arrival cemented his status as a fourth-choice striker. Seeing no pathway to regular football, Welbeck seized a late move to Arsenal for a fee of £16 million.

"It's exciting times for me," Welbeck said after joining the Gunners. "It's great to be a part of this club and it's a team that I've always watched... I've envisaged myself playing in this team before."

Thriving After Old Trafford

Van Gaal later defended the sale, suggesting Welbeck benefited from weekly football he wouldn't have guaranteed at United. Yet former United coach Rene Meulensteen believed Sir Alex Ferguson would never have sanctioned the sale of a homegrown talent.

Welbeck's time at Arsenal was hampered by injuries, but he still scored crucial goals, including a famous last-minute winner against Leicester. After a brief spell at Watford, he has rediscovered his best form at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Last season was the first time Welbeck hit double figures in a Premier League campaign, and he already has eight goals this term, sparking talk of an England recall. His prolific form at the age of 33 leaves some United supporters wondering what might have been if Van Gaal's management had taken a different turn.
