Premier League referees' chief Howard Webb has lifted the lid on why some of the division's top officials have been notably absent from key matches this season. The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) boss addressed concerns over high-profile referees missing big games, citing a combination of VAR controversies and injury issues.
VAR Decisions and Rotation Policy
Webb acknowledged that some referees have been temporarily sidelined following contentious VAR decisions. "We have a duty to manage our officials' workloads and ensure they're mentally prepared for high-pressure situations," he explained. The PGMOL operates a rotation system to prevent burnout among elite referees.
Injury Concerns for Match Officials
Surprisingly, physical injuries have also played a role in referee absences. "People don't always realise how physically demanding refereeing at this level can be," Webb revealed. Several officials have required time off for muscle strains and other fitness issues sustained during matches.

The former World Cup final referee admitted certain high-profile mistakes have led to internal reviews: "When errors occur, we analyse them thoroughly and sometimes decide a short break from the spotlight benefits everyone." Webb confirmed all top officials will be available for the Premier League's decisive run-in: "We've got strong depth in our group, and I'm confident we'll have the right people in place for the important matches coming up."
