Wales concluded their season with a comprehensive 43-0 loss to South Africa in Durban, failing to register a single point as they were overpowered by the Springboks' physicality.
Player Ratings: Back Three
Blair Murray (4) had a difficult afternoon but covered the backfield well at times. Louis Rees-Zammit (5) saw little ball in the first half but chased effectively, pressuring Springboks fullback Vusi Moyo. Ellis Mee (5) started well under the high ball, winning possession in the air and making an excellent try-saving tackle on Cobus Wiese. He was one of Wales' better players and was unlucky not to score a try early in the second half.
Midfield and Fly-half
Max Llewellyn (3) struggled behind a beaten pack, making only two tackles and one carry. Ben Thomas (5) had one strong carry in the first half and showed some nice touches. Dan Edwards (4) was on a hiding to nothing given the pack's struggles; his kicking out of hand was decent but he was far too passive in defence.
Scrum-half and Back Row
Tomos Williams (4) kicked well out of hand in the first half but could not make an attacking impact behind an underpowered pack. Aaron Wainwright (5) got his side out of trouble on several occasions off the back of a retreating scrum and was Wales' top carrier (nine), but he did not play the second half due to injury. Jac Morgan (5) missed a one-on-one tackle on Jasper Wiese that cost a try but fought valiantly, ending as the game's top tackler with 22. Alex Mann (4) could have done better to help Tomos Williams off the back of a scrum when Cobus Reinach scored South Africa's second try; he made 16 tackles but was smashed backwards too often.
Second Row
Teddy Williams (3) struggled to cope with the Springboks' physicality and failed to impose himself. Adam Beard (3) also struggled as the Wales pack was obliterated.
Front Row
Dillon Lewis (3) had a torrid time at the set-piece, with South Africa dominating the scrum, and gave away several penalties. Dewi Lake (5) was solid at the lineout but part of a front-row that struggled badly at scrum time; he made five carries and six tackles before being replaced at half-time. Rhys Carre (3) was shoved backwards at scrum time, missed a tackle on Jasper Wiese for the first Springboks try, and spilled the ball forward in a strong attacking position; he was replaced at half-time.
Replacements
Ryan Elias (6) improved Wales' physicality and made a thunderous try-saving tackle but overthrew an attacking lineout. Nicky Smith (5) improved the scrum slightly. Ben Warren (3) struggled at the scrum and was yellow-carded for a high tackle on Marco van Staden. Freddie Thomas (5) got through a lot of work and was an improvement on the starters. Tommy Reffell (N/A) was not on long enough. James Botham (5) got through a lot of work and was one of the few Wales players who held his own physically; he should have started on the blindside. Reuben Morgan-Williams (N/A) was not on long enough. Joe Hawkins (4) struggled to make an impact and lost the ball in contact on more than one occasion.
