Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday night was overshadowed by a controversial first-half penalty decision. Referee Istvan Kovacs initially awarded a free-kick for handball against Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni after a shot from Dominik Szoboszlai struck the defender's arm. Following a VAR review, Kovacs overturned his decision and restarted play with a drop ball, sparking debate among pundits.
Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, speaking live on air, disagreed with the reversal. He argued that Tchouameni had made his body bigger and that the initial handball call was correct. Clattenburg suggested the referee should have focused on whether the offence occurred inside the penalty area rather than overturning the handball altogether.
Keith Hackett, former chief of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), also criticised the decision. He told Football Insider that Liverpool were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty, stating that the ball clearly struck the defender's arm as he attempted to block the shot. Hackett expressed surprise at the use of a drop ball to restart the game.
The incident divided opinion, with some supporting the referee's final call and others believing Liverpool were denied a clear penalty. The match itself saw Alexis Mac Allister score a second-half header to help secure Liverpool's second consecutive win over the Spanish giants.
