Jamie Redknapp has criticised the officiating in Newcastle United's 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, labelling a penalty decision as 'diabolical'. The Magpies had strong claims for a spot-kick turned down when Jacob Murphy appeared to be fouled by Trevoh Chalobah, but referee David Coote waved away appeals and VAR did not intervene.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: 'It is absolutely diabolical from the referee because you have the luxury of VAR. Chalobah is going in with his wrong foot and it is a blatant penalty. If you cannot see that and you have VAR at your disposal... David Coote needs to make better decisions.' Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards agreed, describing the incident as 'crystal clear'.
The controversy came after Kai Havertz escaped a red card for an elbow on Dan Burn in the first half, receiving only a yellow card. Havertz later scored the only goal of the game, turning in a cross from Jorginho. Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe was furious that the penalty incident was not reviewed.
Pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink praised Havertz's finish, noting the German's composure. Redknapp also commended the goal, though he acknowledged Havertz was 'lucky to be on the pitch'. The defeat leaves Newcastle with one point from their opening two Premier League matches.
