Virgil van Dijk has brushed aside suggestions he could join Real Madrid, insisting his sole focus is on Liverpool despite his contract situation remaining unresolved. The 33-year-old defender was questioned directly by a Spanish reporter after Liverpool's 2-0 Champions League win over Real Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday night.
When asked by El Chiringuito if he would be open to a move to the Bernabeu, a surprised Van Dijk replied: "What a direct question from you! They don’t ask me that directly [in England]. But listen, there is, at the moment, nothing I can say. The only thing that I can say is I’m fully focused on Man City from now on."
The Dutchman, who joined Liverpool from Southampton for a then-world record £75million in January 2018, saw his Anfield contract expire in the summer of 2025. Despite the reporter's persistence, Van Dijk remained steadfast, even pointing out that Real already have Antonio Rudiger in defence.
Van Dijk is one of three key Liverpool players facing an uncertain future, alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah. All three could leave for free next summer if new deals are not agreed. While Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold have stayed quiet, Salah recently admitted he is "probably more out than in" after receiving no contract offer.
