US Soccer Stars Criticise 'Strange' Kit Clash in Belgium Friendly Defeat
US soccer star Christian Pulisic has voiced his frustration over a "strange" kit issue that caused significant confusion during a friendly match against Belgium, leading to a 5-2 defeat for the American team. The mix-up made it difficult for players to distinguish teammates from opponents, directly affecting their decision-making on the pitch.
Uniform Plans Exchanged and Cleared Before Match
According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, both teams had exchanged uniform plans well in advance of the match, and the outfits were officially cleared by match officials before the game commenced. Despite this approval, the visual clash proved problematic during play.
The US team wore new Nike jerseys featuring red and white horizontal stripes, while Belgium sported new Adidas away kits in a light 'Frozen Blue' colour with pink and black trim. This combination created a jarring contrast that players found disorienting.
Player Reactions Highlight Confusion
Following the match, Pulisic stated, "That can’t happen. It was a bit strange." American midfielder Weston McKennie added, “It definitely was a little bit difficult whenever you do like a quick glance to tell which was which. It was almost like a 50-50 thing.”
No alternative kits were available on site, forcing players to continue with the confusing attire for the entire duration of the match. This lack of backup options exacerbated the situation, leaving fans angry and players visibly confused throughout the game.
The incident has sparked discussions about kit coordination in international friendlies, with many calling for stricter protocols to prevent similar issues in future matches.
