Thomas Tuchel believes England's set-piece specialists can provide a significant advantage at the World Cup this summer. The England manager emphasised that free kicks, corners, and throw-ins will be crucial in the heat of North America, particularly in knockout matches.
Tuchel noted that English football is in a 'very physical era' and that set pieces are more prevalent in the Premier League than in other top European leagues. He pointed to players like Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, who are Arsenal's primary corner takers, and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, whose Everton side has not conceded from a corner away from home this season.
The manager also highlighted the aerial threat of Newcastle's 6ft 7in defender Dan Burn and Harry Maguire, whom he described as having a 'super-strength' in both penalty boxes. Maguire has been recalled to the squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, where England will focus on set-piece training.
Tuchel admitted that while he favours the beautiful game, set pieces are a vital part of modern football. 'It has to be a part especially in knockout football,' he said. 'We need to come up with a good plan on how to defend and how to attack set plays and make it an advantage.'
The World Cup will mark 18 months of Tuchel's tenure as England manager. He insisted he has not lost his edge despite being away from club football, adding that he feels excited to have the players back and will push the team for the best outcome.
