Tuchel Warned: England World Cup Squad 'B-team' Could Be Sackable Offence
Tuchel Warned England World Cup Squad Could Be Sackable Offence

Thomas Tuchel has been warned that selecting a 'B-team' for the World Cup should be a sackable offence unless he delivers the trophy this summer. The German coach has named his 26-man squad for the tournament in North America, leaving out high-profile stars such as Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Adam Wharton.

Controversial Squad Selection

Since taking charge, Tuchel has shown a willingness to omit leading talents, a departure from recent England team selection norms. His squad includes the likes of Brentford's Jordan Henderson and outgoing Manchester City centre-half John Stones, despite limited game time this season. Ivan Toney, now playing in Saudi Arabia, is among three number nines selected. The squad's composition has drawn sharp criticism.

Troy Deeney, former Watford striker, commented in The Sun: 'For a nation with A-star talent, we seem to be sending a B-team to the World Cup. Thomas Tuchel has got his principles all muddled up and has selected a squad that, if they do not come back with the trophy, should be a sackable offence.'

Criticism and Comparisons

Deeney added: 'The calls to leave Trent, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden behind could look incredibly stupid in a couple of months. Everyone likes the idea of not picking based on names or egos, but that is an awful lot of quality to be left back home and, with this squad, I cannot see Tuchel taking England any further than Gareth Southgate did.'

At the last World Cup in 2022, England were knocked out in the quarter-finals by France. Four years earlier, Southgate guided them to the semi-finals, losing to Croatia. Since their only World Cup victory in 1966, England have reached the semi-finals just twice.

Tuchel's Defence

Tuchel, arguably the most successful manager to hold the England job since 1966, has already signed a deal beyond the World Cup. He defended his selections, emphasising team balance over individual talent. 'I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players,' he said. 'Teams win championships, it is as simple as that. What we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team. With that in mind, we chose a very balanced squad.'
