Tottenham's Relegation Fight Worsens as Captain Romero Ruled Out for Season
Tottenham Hotspur's already dire Premier League campaign has been dealt a devastating blow with the confirmation that captain Cristian Romero will miss the remainder of the season due to a serious knee injury. The news compounds the misery for Spurs, who find themselves languishing in the relegation zone following a weekend defeat.
Injury Details and Impact
The Argentine defender sustained the injury during Sunday's 1-0 loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Romero collided with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky while chasing back under pressure from striker Brian Brobbey, resulting in his knee smashing into Kinsky's head. While Kinsky suffered a forehead gash, Romero's injury proved far more severe.
Medical scans on Monday revealed a high-grade partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in Romero's right knee. Although surgery won't be required, the centre-back will be unavailable for Tottenham's final six Premier League matches as they battle to avoid the drop.
Relegation Battle Intensifies
Tottenham's defeat, combined with West Ham's comprehensive 4-0 victory over Wolves, has left Roberto De Zerbi's side in 18th position. They now sit two points behind West Ham and three adrift of Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, who have a game in hand.
Romero's absence represents a significant loss for a team already struggling for form. The defender has been a rare bright spot in Tottenham's difficult season, contributing six goals and four assists across 32 appearances in all competitions. His partnership with Micky van de Ven had shown promise, but the Dutchman will now likely partner either Kevin Danso or Radu Dragusin in defence.
Manager's Reaction and Team Morale
New manager Roberto De Zerbi, who replaced Igor Tudor after his brief 44-day tenure, expressed his concern about Romero's injury following the Sunderland defeat. "I hope for us it's not too important a problem because he's a crucial player for us, a good guy, top player, big personality and we need him to finish the season and to achieve our goal," De Zerbi stated.
The Italian manager acknowledged the psychological toll on his squad, saying "The players are all good guys, and they are suffering for this moment. They are not happy when we lose the game or they are not happy to see Tottenham at the bottom of the table, for sure." He emphasised the need for positivity, adding "We have to find the energy, we have to find the right spirit to be positive."
Remaining Fixtures and World Cup Hope
Tottenham face a challenging run-in without their captain, beginning with Saturday's home match against Brighton before travelling to face bottom-placed Wolves. Their final four fixtures include encounters with Aston Villa, Leeds, Chelsea, and Everton.
The team's form makes for grim reading, with Spurs winless in 14 league matches throughout 2026. De Zerbi's warning that "We are Tottenham, but we are not going to win the game just because we are Tottenham. You can't win the game with the paper" underscores the magnitude of the task ahead.
There is a silver lining for Romero personally, as his recovery timeline suggests he could still feature for Argentina in this summer's World Cup. However, for Tottenham, his absence represents another obstacle in their fight for Premier League survival.
