Households urged to remove stains from white clothes with 4 simple kitchen staples
Remove white clothes stains with 4 kitchen staples

Households are being encouraged to ditch expensive stain removers and head to the kitchen cupboard instead, as an expert reveals four everyday ingredients that can help lift marks from white clothes.

Four kitchen staples for stain removal

Caroline Jackson, Creative Director at Monsoon, recommends using a combination of baking soda, lemon juice, white vinegar and washing-up liquid, along with cold water, to help remove stains from white fabrics.

She said: "Utilising at home ingredients can be some of the most effective ways to lift stains from bright white garments. Baking soda, mixed with lemon juice, white vinegar, dish soap and cold water is what is going to successfully refresh your clothes without trying different brands and sprays that will end up costing a fortune."

How to apply the method

Rinse the stain with cold water, then simply add the combined mixture on the stain, grab a toothbrush and brush the stain away. This should help lift marks on the suitable fabric but I always recommend testing first, because lemon juice and vinegar can affect some fibres and finishes. It’s important to note that leaving lemon too long on fabrics can cause discolouration, so ensure you keep a close eye when treating any stains using this method.

Common mistakes to avoid

Jackson also highlighted a number of common mistakes people make when trying to remove stains from white clothing. Using too much stain remover can leave residue behind, while scrubbing too hard may force stains deeper into the fabric or damage delicate fibres. She also advises avoiding hot water, tumble dryers and irons until the stain has completely disappeared, as heat can permanently set some marks.

Finally, she says it's important to check the care label before treating a stain, as different fabrics require different cleaning methods.

She added: "We believe caring for your favourite pieces is just as important as choosing them, small wardrobe accidents are inevitable, but understanding how to treat stains properly can help extend the life of garments and keep them looking their best."
