Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) and Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) find their lives turned upside down in Coronation Street next week after a shocking discovery leaves them dealing with tragedy, guilt and an unexpected new arrival.
Richie's Arrival and Trouble
It all begins when Tim’s cousin Richie turns up on the Street looking for somewhere to stay. After receiving a text from his wife Rachel, Richie admits he’s in the doghouse for staying out all night. When Sally arrives home, Tim tries to cover his tracks by claiming he spent a quiet evening playing board games with the lads.
The truth doesn’t stay hidden for long, though. Richie soon returns carrying a holdall and reveals that Rachel has thrown him out. Left with little choice, Tim sheepishly admits he actually spent the night drinking with his cousin, leaving Sally reluctantly agreeing to let Richie stay at No.4 for a little while longer.
A Heartbreaking Discovery
But the arrangement doesn’t last. Fed up, Sally tells Tim she wants Richie out of the house. Richie insists he’ll head to Liverpool to stay with a friend instead, and as Tim helps him into a taxi, he encourages his cousin not to give up on his marriage and to go home and make things right with Rachel.
Unfortunately, those words take on a heartbreaking significance. After Richie leaves, Tim discovers his cousin’s wallet wedged down the sofa. Hoping to return it, he heads to Richie’s house. When Richie answers the door, Tim immediately realises something is terribly wrong. Richie appears confused and is wearing a blood-splattered shirt. Horrified by what he sees inside the house, Tim wastes no time calling the police.
Murder Charge and a New Arrival
The following day, Tim and Sally sit together in stunned silence after a sleepless night as they try to process everything that’s happened. Detective Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) later arrives with devastating news. Richie has been charged with the murder of his wife, Rachel, although he insists he acted in self-defence. Lisa also reveals another tragic consequence of the crime. Richie’s daughter Lucy has been taken into care following her mother’s death.
The news hits Tim hard, and before long he’s determined to do something to help. When social worker Ruth contacts Sally to explain that Lucy’s foster placement has fallen through and they’re struggling to find another suitable home, Tim makes a life-changing decision without discussing it with his wife. He offers Lucy a place to stay.
Challenges Ahead
Although caught off guard, Sally puts on a brave face when Lucy arrives. Ruth explains that the youngster is suffering from immense grief and trauma following everything she’s been through, and she’ll need plenty of patience and reassurance in the weeks ahead. It’s immediately clear, though, that welcoming Lucy into their home won’t be straightforward. When Sally heads upstairs to call her down for tea, she’s horrified to discover Lucy has disappeared. After a frantic search, Sally and Tim eventually find her sitting alone at a bus stop and gently persuade her to return home.
Later in the week, Sally and Tim are jolted awake by a scream and rush to find Lucy distressed after suffering a terrifying nightmare. The emotional strain also begins to take its toll on their own relationship. Consumed by guilt, Tim suggests that if Sally had agreed to let Richie stay for longer, Rachel might still be alive. His comments only deepen the tension between the couple as they struggle to come to terms with everything that’s happened.
Meanwhile, Lucy finds herself involved in another upsetting incident when Lily Platt spots her sitting alone in Victoria Garden. After Lucy ignores her, Lily cruelly calls her a ‘freak’ before trying to walk away. Lucy reacts by grabbing Lily’s arm, with Jodie stepping in to break things up.
As Sally and Tim try to support a traumatised young girl while navigating their own shock and grief, the couple quickly realise they’ve taken on far more than they ever expected. Can they give Lucy the stability she desperately needs, or will the devastating events surrounding Richie’s crime change their lives forever?
