Thomas Frank criticised two VAR decisions that he felt favoured Liverpool in Tottenham's 2-1 defeat on Saturday night. The Spurs boss was particularly angered by the first-half red card shown to Xavi Simons, upgraded from a yellow after VAR review for a challenge on Virgil van Dijk. 'I don't like those types of red card because I think the game is gone if that's a red card,' Frank told the BBC. 'We have the referee's call and that was a yellow, so that's why I don't think that's a red.'
Frank also questioned why VAR did not intervene when Hugo Ekitiké pushed Cristian Romero before scoring Liverpool's second goal. 'A big mistake,' he said. 'Two hands in the back from the striker: as far as I know the laws of football you are not allowed to do that.' He added that Romero's second yellow card for kicking out at Ibrahima Konaté could have been handled more sensibly.
Despite the defeat, Frank praised his team's resilience. 'I'm extremely proud of the players and the team. I think they gave everything, showed unbelievable mentality and worked very hard on how to deal with setbacks.' Tottenham have lost 11 home league games in 2025, a club record, and sit 13th in the table.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed concern over Alexander Isak's injury after the striker scored the opening goal but limped off. 'If a player scores, gets injured and doesn't try to come back on then that's not usually a good thing,' Slot said. Liverpool moved level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
