Ilia Topuria has issued a chilling warning to US President Donald Trump ahead of his highly anticipated UFC title defence against Justin Gaethje. The lightweight champion, known as 'El Matador', will headline the historic 'Freedom 250' event on June 14, held on the grounds of the White House, with Trump expected to be seated cageside.
Topuria's Promise to Trump
Topuria, who vacated the featherweight title to move up to the 155lb division last year, captured the lightweight belt by brutally stopping Charles Oliveira in the first round. Now, facing interim champion Justin Gaethje, he has sent a direct message to the US President. “Don’t blink or start fixing your hair,” Topuria told Marca. “Because it’s going to be over quickly.”
The Georgian-Spanish fighter is confident that his clash with Gaethje will not go the distance, citing his opponent's aggressive style. “Based on his fighting style, how he comes out in every fight, I see it ending quickly, honestly,” Topuria added. “I see it similar to the Charles Oliveira fight. Because I don’t see him as someone who’s going to trade and then back up, or fight while moving backward. I think he’s the kind of guy who offers a fight. And when you do that, I think you’re making a mistake. Especially when you’re fighting someone like me, who has so much technique.”
Gaethje's Challenge
Gaethje, 37, will be donning the American flag in the main event, and Trump may have a soft spot for the interim champion. However, Gaethje has fallen short in his two previous undisputed title fights, losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. He enters this bout after a gritty win over Paddy Pimblett in January for the interim lightweight title.
Topuria is taking nothing for granted, acknowledging the toughness of his opponent. The fight card, revealed by UFC supremo Dana White, notably excludes Conor McGregor and Jon Jones, both of whom were snubbed for the showcase event. Topuria's first title defence promises fireworks, as both fighters are renowned for their knockout power, and few expect the bout to last the full five rounds.
