The New Lion Emerges as Champion Hurdle Favourite After Constitution Hill Withdrawal
Trainer Dan Skelton has expressed strong confidence that The New Lion possesses all the necessary qualities to secure victory in the upcoming Unibet Champion Hurdle. This surge in optimism follows the dramatic news that former champion Constitution Hill will not compete at the Cheltenham Festival, instead opting to focus entirely on a career in Flat racing.
Market Shifts and Betting Reactions
The racing world was rocked by Nicky Henderson's announcement regarding Constitution Hill's future, effectively ending the star's illustrious career over jumps. In response, bookmakers swiftly adjusted their odds, with The New Lion, owned by JP McManus, becoming the new outright favourite.
Coral slashed his odds to 9-4 from 5-2, while Betfred now lists him as the 2-1 favourite. David Stevens of Coral noted, "The market drift on Constitution Hill earlier suggested his absence, and now with confirmation, The New Lion stands as the clear favourite for the day one feature."
Robert Ford of Betfred added, "Constitution Hill was previously a joint-favourite with The New Lion, but his withdrawal has created a new outright favourite. Brighterdaysahead remains at 11-4, joined by Willie Mullins' Lossiemouth at the same price."
In a gesture of goodwill, Boylesports announced it would refund all Champion Hurdle bets placed on Constitution Hill. Spokesperson Brian O'Keeffe remarked, "Constitution Hill has given so much to National Hunt racing, and he's had loyal supporters throughout his career."

Skelton reflected on his charge's progress, stating, "His season had a rocky start at Newcastle, but I learned valuable insights about him that day. The unanswered question was whether he had the speed for two miles, and I believe he answered it, despite the fall."
He continued, "He further proved himself on Trials day, demonstrating quick-footedness and excellent handling by jockey Harry Skelton. While it wasn't the most competitive race, it confirmed his capabilities."
Skelton's Confidence and Tactical Approach
Expressing unwavering belief in his horse, Skelton said, "I think he's in great physical condition, and I wouldn't swap him for any other. We never planned to take him to Kempton for the Christmas Hurdle, so we haven't missed any key races. The only thing lacking this season is a clear round and a strong finish at Newcastle."
He added with cautious optimism, "I believe we have all the attributes needed to win a Champion Hurdle, though I acknowledge I've never won one before. This represents our best chance yet.
