Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Coventry City midfielder George Shepherd, a 16-year-old talent who has impressed under manager Frank Lampard. Shepherd was named on the bench for Coventry's Championship clash against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, following his debut for the club's U21 side earlier this season.
The Daily Mail claims that United are among several high-profile clubs 'tracking' the youngster, who has one goal and an assist for the U21s. Lampard, a former Chelsea midfielder, praised Shepherd's versatility and dedication, noting that he has been training with the first team regularly.
“He’s a really talented young boy, a local lad and a Coventry fan. He loves the club and he’s still 16,” Lampard told CoventryLive. “He’s been playing on the right wing a little bit for us in the 21s but he can play as a ten. There’s a bit of an eight/ten there so he’s a very versatile attacking player.”
Shepherd will hope to make his first-team debut in Coventry's next match against Portsmouth on Tuesday evening. Lampard's side currently sit top of the Championship table after 10 matches.
