Coronation Street made history on Thursday as Carla Connor and Lisa Swain became the soap's first lesbian couple to successfully marry. The emotional ceremony, which aired on ITVX, saw the fan-favourite duo exchange vows in an intimate service attended by close friends and family.
The couple, known to fans as Swarla, have faced numerous obstacles since getting together in late 2024. Their engagement was nearly derailed when Lisa's presumed-dead wife Becky returned, having been part of a corrupt police cover-up. Becky's attempts to win Lisa back included kidnapping Carla, but after a rescue mission involving Emmerdale, Becky was jailed and the couple rekindled their romance.
During the ceremony, Carla, who has been married five times before, kissed Lisa's hand and declared: 'I love you. We're our own love story, aren't we? Our own little team... Standing side-by-side, forever.' The pair were pronounced wife and wife as The Turtles' 'Happy Together' played, and both adopted the surname Connor-Swain.
Fans took to social media to express their joy, with one writing: 'When Happy Together starts playing after Carla saying forever please, I feel like my heart's gonna launch out my body.' Another said: 'First and foremost Congratulations lovebirds... Touching vows, intimate setting.'
The happiness was short-lived, however, as a scream was heard just before the first dance. Carla dismissed it as foxes, but the scene sets up an upcoming murder week, with five potential victims and suspects. Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks described the storyline as 'very complex, but satisfying and enjoyable.'
