Stirling Albion 0-1 Dundee United: Late penalty breaks Binos

Zac Sapsford's stoppage-time penalty secured Dundee United a 1-0 victory over Stirling Albion at Forthbank, denying new Binos boss Steven Whittaker a battling draw in a pre-season friendly. The Australian forward converted from the spot after a tired challenge from Sam Denham, sending goalkeeper Andy McNeil the wrong way in front of the relieved United support on the eastern terrace.

Defensive resilience from the Binos

A Stirling side often criticised for defensive fragility last term looked an altogether tougher nut to crack as the Terrors laboured on a steamy early evening. The new-look Albion side performed well to hold their Premiership hosts for much of the afternoon, with Whittaker starting five of his summer captures in the eleven. Top scorer Russell McLean was joined in a front two by Jordan Allan, while Andy McNeil was given the gloves ahead of youngster Robert Duffy. The defence saw Sam Denham preferred alongside Lee Hamilton, while Robbie McNab kicked off the match in a new right-back role behind another summer arrival in Murray Thomas.

United's early pressure

United had the first real threat of the game as Hamilton had to be on his toes to head clear in front of Lachlan Rose from a Dario Naamo cross. Rose threatened again on 13 minutes when a deep cross was tossed to the back post after a period of United pressure and the forward's header across goal was well blocked by the foot of McNeil. McNeil was called into action a couple of minutes later to parry away a close range Naamo shot after a neat turn from the visiting midfielder.

The action was brought to a halt 17 minutes into the match as crowd trouble in the home end was dealt with by stewards and police, with the match resuming a few minutes later as both sides took the chance for an impromptu World Cup-style hydration break. The away side were back on the attack shortly afterwards as Rose drove forward and slid in strike partner Sapsford, who was well marshalled by a pair of Binos defenders before lashing his shot from a narrow angle well wide.

Best chances go begging

The best chance of the match came just before the half hour as Sapsford worked his way down the right flank and cut back to an unmarked Panutche Camara 12 yards out, but he side footed his shot over the bar. A rare foray forward for Stirling brought a corner from which Josh Mullin swung in a good cross for Hamilton, but the defender mistimed the jump and flicked well wide. An elongated first half from the crowd trouble and an injury to Mullin offered the chance for the Arabs to go in with an advantage, with Sapsford next to squander an opening by blasting over from the edge of the box.

Second half stalemate

The second half began with more gradual pressure from United, although the Binos settled quicker and managed to quell clear chances on their goal. It took until 17 minutes into the half for the Dundonians to threaten as more good work on the flank from Naamo slid the ball for Dylan Tait, who curled his shot narrowly wide. The away side turned the wick up as the half went on and were inches away from the opener as Naamo cracked an effort from 18 yards which shaved the post with McNeil beaten. Stirling were riding their luck as the game wound towards a conclusion, with Albion scrambling the ball away multiple times from a stramash in the box after a United corner.

Late heartbreak

The home side had fought valiantly through the 90 minutes, but just as it looked like they would secure an excellent point, the Arabs hit the killer blow from the spot. A tired challenge saw Sam Denham bring down Sapsford in the box and the Australian forward dusted himself down for a cool spot kick as he sent McNeil the wrong way. It was to be the final action as a promising defensive display led to little on the board as the Binos headed to the capital for a clash with Spartans on Tuesday evening.
