Steve Nash on NBA Europe and London's Basketball Future

Basketball legend Steve Nash has spoken about the potential for an NBA Europe league, describing it as an exciting venture that could elevate the sport across the continent. The two-time MVP, who has English parents and grew up on Vancouver Island, said London feels like a second home to him.

Speaking at the O2 Arena, Nash reflected on the growth of international players in the NBA. He noted that 135 players from 43 countries were on opening-night rosters this season, up from 7% in 1992 to 24% now. 'The world gets smaller with the internet and social media,' he said. 'It's only natural that more Europeans have success.'

On the prospect of NBA Europe, with teams potentially linked to major football clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Nash said: 'That could be great. Big picture: it'd be really good if the NBA Europe venture takes off.' He suggested starting with eight to 12 teams, drawing parallels to the growth of Major League Soccer, where he is a co-owner of Vancouver Whitecaps.

Nash, also a co-owner of Real Mallorca, said he is not actively seeking involvement in an NBA Europe startup but would find it exciting. He emphasised that new investment and storytelling could help the league reach new markets, unlike the Euroleague, which he feels may have hit a glass ceiling.
