Newcastle United teenager Sean Steur was told he lost his place on a seniority call ahead of the 4-1 loss at the CBS Arena. The Dutch youngster was many people's shout for man of the match in the 2-1 win over Hull City, but was benched as Nico Gonzalez made a return to the starting XI.
Jaissle explains Steur decision
Newcastle could have done with the ex-Ajax kid's bite in midfield as they were overrun, with the ex-Man City schemer and Joe Willock struggling in the East Midlands. When asked why Steur had been left out, Jaissle said: “Because in that position Nico Gonzalez was starting. Therefore, we decided to play Nico.”
It remains to be seen whether Steur is restored into the engine room for Saturday night's clash with Aston Villa, as leaving £50m man Gonzalez out would be a huge call. What does feel apparent after the rout at Coventry is that Jaissle is being strictly guided on selection by the medical and performance team, something he admitted last night.
Support network gathers around Matias Fernandez-Pardo
The £51million man is still just 21 and is learning his trade in the Premier League, but last night he endured a tough one at Coventry. After stepping over a decent cross into the box, things looked like they had opened up for him before half-time as he made a darting run into the final third, beating his marker and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, only to see his effort hacked off the line by Bobby Thomas.
As William Osula returns to fitness, questions were asked on the Belgian youngster's ability to cope with the high-octane nature of the Premier League under pressure. But Jaissle responded: "The goal is missing. He is a young lad. We support him, and we trust him, no doubt." Jaissle must now assess the fitness of Denmark star Osula ahead of the encounter with Villa before making his choice on his lone striker.
Matthias Jaissle's demand for Aston Villa clash
The German head coach has urged his players to "learn fast" as the games start to mount up in the Premier League for his young Magpies. It's a home clash against Unai Emery's Villa next up before a trip to Crystal Palace, which never seems to be easy for United.
After some defensive errors and poor finishing, with Joe Willock and Harvey Barnes also guilty of missed chances, Jaissle said: "In the boxes the games are decided. In both boxes we were not clean. It's something we need to learn fast. The momentum was there. We have a young squad but that shouldn't be an excuse. It was a tough game in general."
