The final 48 hours of the three sisters who took their own lives by drowning in the sea have been revealed. Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were pulled from the water at Brighton beach on May 13.
Authorities initially thought the trio had been wearing 'party clothes' when they entered the sea, leading to speculation the incident may have been a post-clubbing swim gone wrong. It would turn out that all three were devout churchgoers and had meticulously planned the tragic evening, right down to which shoes they were wearing.
Planned journey to Birmingham
After their deaths earlier this year, details emerged of a tragedy that had blighted their young lives. Their mother Janice had died by drowning in a Birmingham lake in 2010. Last week an inquest hearing confirmed the trio had deliberately taken their own lives.
On the evening of Monday, May 11, Jane, Christina and Rebecca set off from the home they shared in Greenford, west London. They made a 115-mile pilgrimage to the picturesque park water feature in which their mother Janice had been found dead 16 years earlier, aged 43.
Before they'd left, the trio settled up all their debts and closed their bank accounts and "thoroughly cleaned" the tower block flat they lived in, clearing it of their possessions. In an uncharacteristically extravagant move, the normally financially conservative trio took an Uber to Birmingham, costing an estimated £200.
Final movements on the coast
They were dropped off near their childhood home on Linton Walk, which they once shared with their mother, at 11.36pm. It's believed they paid a visit to their mother's nearby grave before heading to Brookvale Lake, where Janice had been discovered deceased on February 3, 2010.
After spending less than two hours in the city, they were collected near the lake by another taxi at 1.28am the following morning and driven back to London. Later that evening, the trio boarded a train to Brighton, arriving at 10.21pm, before hailing yet another Uber, this time to the beachfront near the marina, approximately two miles from the city centre. The driver later informed police he was struck by the absence of conversation among them.
After examining hundreds of hours of CCTV footage, Sussex Police pieced together a timeline of the sisters' movements upon reaching the south coast. Over a four-hour period, the sisters were observed pacing the road near the beachfront in the darkness.
Bodies recovered
At 2.42am, the sisters were captured on camera for the last time as they finally ventured onto the beach and towards the sea. Just over three hours later, at 5.45am, a cyclist reported spotting a body on the beach.
Jane was retrieved from the shore by an RNLI crew and pronounced dead at the scene on the morning of Wednesday, May 13. Christina's body was recovered from the water by a lifeboat crew. Rebecca's body, which seemed to have washed ashore, was found later on Brighton beach.
