Israel captain Manor Solomon has criticised the Republic of Ireland after their 3-0 Nations League defeat, saying: “Obviously they hate us. We don't like them.”
The match was played against an intensely political backdrop, with Ireland's players wearing black armbands and bowing their heads during the Israeli national anthem. There were also no handshakes between the teams before kick-off.
Stunning First-Half Performance
West Ham winger Solomon made the comments after Ireland produced a stunning first-half performance in Debrecen, scoring three times inside 25 minutes to secure a commanding victory. Israel manager Ran Ben Shimon described his side's performance as “shameful”.
Solomon accused some Ireland players of saying things to their Israeli opponents during the match and suggested he could face a suspension if he revealed exactly what was said.
Solomon's Response
“If I say what I think of the Irish players, I'd likely be suspended for a few matches,” Solomon told Israeli television.
“Obviously, they hate us. We don't like them. I'm waiting for the next game against them. It will be a completely different game.”
He added: “We have a country 10 times better than theirs, stronger, an amazing country with amazing people.”
Return Fixture and Boycott Calls
The two nations are due to meet again next Sunday, with the return fixture taking place in Serbia.
Ireland had faced calls to boycott the fixture, while goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad, citing his opposition to the conflict in Gaza. The remaining members of the squad took a vote over the fixture, in which the majority voted in favour of playing.
