Solanke: I should have scored hat-trick vs Man Utd

Dominic Solanke admitted he "should have scored a hat-trick" after his late goal rescued a point for Tottenham in a 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Saturday evening.

Late equaliser after early misses

United started poorly and conceded several chances, but the away side failed to convert, leaving the door open for Bryan Mbeumo to strike the opener in the 73rd minute.

Five minutes later, Tottenham looked set to rue their missed opportunities when they went down to 10 men. Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a straight red card after pointing his head toward Luke Shaw, leaving Tottenham with an uphill battle to salvage a point. Solanke scored the equaliser in added time.

Solanke's verdict on the match

Speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle, Solanke admitted he had enough chances to have left with a hat-trick.

"In the first half we dominated. We weren't clinical enough – a story of the season. We could have been a few goals ahead. We'll take a point," Solanke said.

"The character shown was magnificent. A few times we haven't reacted in the right way when going a goal down but today we showed fight and grit."

"I should have had a hat-trick. I wasn't clinical enough. I know that. But I kept going. I was getting in the right positions to put one away. It's my first time being captain, for a great club. To score as well, it's something I'll remember for the rest of my career."

"It's something to build on. We haven't been good enough this season. Hopefully this is the start of something good."

Stats and season struggles

Although Tottenham created 1.71 expected goals (xG), they only managed to record three shots on target during the game.

Despite spending £334m in the summer, Spurs have struggled for goals this season, having failed to score in four of their six league games.
