World Snooker Championship Prize Fund to Increase to £3 Million in 2027

The World Snooker Tour has officially confirmed a significant financial enhancement for the sport's premier event. In a recent statement, the organisation announced that the prize fund for the 2027 World Snooker Championship will be increased by 25%, raising the total pool to £3 million. This marks a substantial rise from the current £2.4 million, reflecting a commitment to rewarding competitors at the highest level.

Details of the Prize Money Increase

The victor of the World Championship will now receive £625,000, up from £500,000, providing a greater incentive for players vying for the prestigious title. The WST has also confirmed that comparable financial increases will be implemented for each stage of the competition, with complete details of the prize money distributions to be revealed in due course. This move is expected to boost player morale and competitiveness in the lead-up to the 2027 event.

UK Championship Also Benefits

In addition to the World Championship, the UK Championship will receive a substantial financial uplift. The prize fund for this tournament will rise to £1.5 million, up from £1.2 million, when it takes place in York later in November. The winner will claim £312,500, an improvement on last year's figure of £250,000 that Mark Selby secured. This dual increase underscores a broader strategy to enhance the financial rewards across major snooker competitions.

Current Championship Action

The announcement comes as the opening round of the World Snooker Championship is currently underway at the Crucible in Sheffield. Defending champion Zhao Xintong overcame a challenging first session against Liam Highfield to progress, with Mark Allen and John Higgins also advancing. In other matches, Kyren Wilson delivered a remarkable fightback from 7-3 behind to defeat teenage prodigy Stan Moody 10-7, though he faced criticism for his excessive celebrations during the match.

Upcoming Matches and Player Focus

Today's schedule features Judd Trump taking on Gary Wilson and Chris Wakelin meeting Liam Pullen in the morning session. Ronnie O'Sullivan returns to the Crucible in the 2.30pm session as he faces He Guoqiang in his quest to win his eighth World Championship crown. Shaun Murphy will finish his final session against Fan Zhengyi, holding a 5-4 advantage ahead of their 7pm encounter.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, Wakelin and Pullen will wrap up their match, with Mark Selby going head-to-head against Jak Jones. Si Jiahui meets Hossein Vafaei in the afternoon, and Neil Robertson plays Pang Junxu in the evening session. These matches continue to build excitement as players compete not only for glory but also for the enhanced financial rewards that will be on offer from next year.
