Morrison Points to Stark Contrast in Liverpool Left-Back Management
Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison has voiced criticism regarding Arne Slot's handling of Liverpool summer signing Milos Kerkez, drawing a direct comparison to how Jurgen Klopp integrated Andy Robertson during his tenure at Anfield.
Integration Methods Under Scrutiny
Speaking exclusively to Freebets.com, Morrison emphasised the differing approaches between the two managers. "Kerkez has been thrown in and struggled - I liked how Klopp eased Robertson in gradually. Slot hasn't done that (with Kerkez)," he stated. The observation comes after Kerkez, who joined from AFC Bournemouth, experienced a challenging initial period at Liverpool before showing gradual improvement in performances.
Despite Kerkez's progress, Slot opted for experience in last Sunday's Merseyside Derby victory over Everton, starting Andy Robertson at left-back. Robertson, who joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 early in Klopp's reign, was praised by Morrison for his smoother integration process under the German manager's guidance.
Robertson's Departure and Derby Significance
The Scot nearly transferred to Tottenham Hotspur in the January window before the deal was halted. It has since been confirmed that the 32-year-old will leave the club after nearly a decade at the season's end, making his final Merseyside Derby appearance alongside Mohamed Salah, who marked the occasion by scoring the opening goal.
Beto later equalised for Everton, but Virgil van Dijk headed home the winner in stoppage time, relieving some pressure on Slot and strengthening Liverpool's position to qualify for next season's Champions League.
Season Assessment and Future Prospects
Although this season has been disappointing for the reigning champions, Morrison believes a top-five finish would be sufficient to retain Slot as manager. "He needed to finish in a Champions League spot. If he does that, I think he gets another season — at least the start of it. There'll be more players going than just Robertson and Salah," he explained.
Morrison added that player sales would likely free up funds for new talent, addressing fan discontent over Slot's style of play. "I speak to a lot of my Liverpool friends who aren't happy — the style of football, the passivity. But you have to think back to last season when he won the Premier League. A lot has happened at Liverpool this season. If he secures Champions League football, I think he starts next season as Liverpool manager."
Upcoming Fixtures and Predictions
Following midweek results, Liverpool's seven-point gap over teams below fifth place has shifted, but Slot's side can restore that advantage by defeating Crystal Palace at Anfield this weekend. Morrison, however, notes the challenge, as Palace have beaten Liverpool three times this season.
Despite this, he backs a home win, citing Palace's potential distraction. "On the weekend it's a tricky one — Palace will have one eye on the Conference League semi-final against Shakhtar Donetsk. This could actually be Liverpool's time to beat them," Morrison admitted.
