Liverpool boss Arne Slot has delivered a clear message regarding Mohamed Salah's situation, emphasising that actions speak louder than words when it comes to the Egyptian forward's future at Anfield. This comes after Salah's emotional departure for the Africa Cup of Nations, following a record-breaking assist in the 2-0 win over Brighton.
Slot's Firm Stance on Salah Speculation
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, 19 December 2025, ahead of Liverpool's Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening, Slot was again quizzed about Salah. The manager pointed to the player's recent reintegration into the squad as the most telling sign. "I said last week, actions speak louder than words," Slot reiterated. "We moved on, he was in the squad and was the first substitution I made. Now he's got Afcon and will play some big games so it's only fair that all focus is on them."
This follows a period of uncertainty where Slot had omitted Salah from the travelling party for the Champions League victory against Inter Milan. However, the 33-year-old returned to feature against Brighton, where he set up a goal and broke the record for the most Premier League goals and assists for a single club.
Van Dijk's Hope and Saudi Interest
The question of whether Salah has played his final game for Liverpool remains open. There is renewed speculation of January interest from the Saudi Pro League, casting a shadow over his long-term status. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk admitted he has little control over the outcome but expressed a strong desire for Salah to stay. "He is one of the leaders. I would love to have him around," Van Dijk stated. "We hope he comes back and is important for us for the rest of the season. But we all know football and have no idea what will happen."
Van Dijk confirmed he has personally urged Salah to remain at the club, adding that they will remain in contact during the international tournament.
Team News for Tottenham Clash
Liverpool will definitely be without Salah and defender Joe Gomez for the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Gomez was injured in the first half against Brighton, which prompted Salah's introduction. There was more positive news regarding forward Cody Gakpo. "[Gakpo] had a scan that looked promising, so we're not that worried anymore," Slot revealed. "He might come back earlier than expected, but definitely not tomorrow."
Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, however, is edging closer to a return after training on Thursday. Slot indicated a late decision would be made on his availability following a session on Friday. The Reds will be looking to build momentum from their victory over Brighton as they face a tough test in North London.
