Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid survived a dramatic penalty decision to keep their Champions League hopes alive, setting up a second-leg showdown with Arsenal. The Spanish side, seeking their first final since 2016, benefited from a VAR reversal that denied Arsenal a late spot-kick, allowing the tie to remain level after a 1-1 draw at the Metropolitano.
The match was defined by two penalties. Viktor Gyökeres converted for Arsenal in the first half, but Julián Alvarez equalised for Atlético after the break. A second Arsenal penalty was initially awarded when Dávid Hancko fouled Eberechi Eze, but referee Danny Makkelie overturned the decision after reviewing the incident, ruling the contact insufficient. Simeone, who had pushed Hancko in celebration of the call, expressed visible relief.
Atletico’s history in the competition has been marked by heartbreak, including three final defeats—most notably to Real Madrid in 2014 and 2016. The club, once dubbed ‘El Pupas’ (the jinxed one), has long sought redemption. This semi-final is their first in nine years, and the atmosphere at the Metropolitano reflected the occasion, with fans lining the streets and creating a fervent backdrop.
Julián Alvarez was a standout performer, orchestrating play and scoring his 11th Champions League goal. Simeone praised the forward, who has been linked with Arsenal, as ‘a very good player’. Atlético dominated the second half with 18 shots, but Arsenal held firm. The tie remains finely balanced ahead of the return leg in London.
