Scott Parker has departed from his role as head coach of Burnley following the club's relegation from the Premier League. The announcement came on Thursday, confirming that the former England midfielder left by mutual consent.
Promotion and Relegation
Parker, 45, guided Burnley to promotion back to the top flight in the 2024-25 season after an outstanding Championship campaign where they accumulated 100 points. However, this season proved challenging, with the team winning only four league games and being relegated with four matches remaining.
The club's statement read: "Scott Parker has left his position as head coach of Burnley Football Club by mutual consent. Following confirmation of the club's relegation from the Premier League last week, Parker and the board held discussions and mutually agreed that his time at Turf Moor would conclude."
Parker's Tenure
Parker succeeded Vincent Kompany in the summer of 2024. After the previous season's relegation, during which Burnley were criticized for being too open, Parker implemented a more pragmatic style. This approach paid dividends in the Championship, where they kept 30 clean sheets during their promotion push.
However, the same strategy did not prove effective in the Premier League. Burnley currently sit 19th in the table, 16 points behind 17th place. Parker's management career includes previous spells at Fulham, Bournemouth, and Club Brugge.
Parker's Statement
Parker expressed his gratitude in a statement: "It has been an immense privilege to lead this great club over the past two years. I have enjoyed every moment of our journey together, but feel that now is the right time for both parties to move in a different direction. I reflect back with great pride on what we achieved during my time at the club, especially our unforgettable promotion season in 2024-25, and it was a true honour to lead this team into the Premier League."
Interim Arrangements
Assistant Mike Jackson will take temporary charge for the remaining matches of the season, starting with Friday's trip to Leeds. The club has begun the process of appointing a new permanent head coach ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The club added: "The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Scott for his professionalism, dedication and contribution. He leaves with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected with Burnley Football Club."
