Paul Scholes has called for a major overhaul at Manchester United, suggesting eight first-team players should be sold this summer. The club legend made the remarks during a 'keep or sell' segment on The Good, the Bad and the Football podcast, alongside former teammate Nicky Butt and TV personality Paddy McGuinness.
The players Scholes identified as surplus to requirements are Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Patrick Dorgu, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee. The list includes several high-profile names, with Zirkzee and Mazraoui having seen reduced game time this season.
However, Maguire's future at Old Trafford appears secure after the defender signed a new one-year contract on Tuesday, with the club holding an option to extend for a further year. The 33-year-old has enjoyed a resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick, helping United climb to third in the Premier League table.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Maguire said: 'Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons.'
United are expected to focus their summer investment on midfield, but departures will be crucial to generate funds and free up squad space. Carrick's side have benefited from a three-week break before facing Leeds United next Monday, having travelled to Dublin for intensive training.
