Paul Scholes Demands Major Manchester United Clear-Out
Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has delivered a brutal assessment of the club's current squad, naming eight players he believes should be sold this summer. The former midfielder insists this drastic overhaul is essential if United are to compete for the Premier League and Champions League titles under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Financial Pressures Force United's Hand
United face significant challenges with Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) and the impending Squad Cost Ratio (SCR), meaning sales are necessary to fund a reconstruction. Despite heavy spending last summer to avoid a repeat of last season's poor performance, the team remains far from challenging for major silverware. Carrick, who continues on an interim basis until the season's end, has seen calls for him to take the role permanently, though the club is in no rush to replace Ruben Amorim.
Scholes' Scathing Player-by-Player Analysis
On The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Scholes was asked which players to retain or offload. He began with defender Leny Yoro, stating, "I think he's struggled, me. I think there's something in there, he needs time, but if you had to make a choice now, I'd probably sell him." He was equally harsh on Noussair Mazraoui, saying, "Sell. I don't know where he fits in. He's been like a right-sided centre-half, and they don't play with three centre-halves anymore."
Turning to Luke Shaw, Scholes remarked, "When he was playing consistently, I don't think there was a better left-back in the world. But I'd sell him now—he doesn't play enough games." Patrick Dorgu, brought in for Amorim's system, also faced criticism: "They brought him in as a wing-back, and he's not really played much there. I'd probably sell. I'm not sure what position he is."
Midfield and Attack Under Fire
With Casemiro expected to depart and midfield reinforcements likely, Scholes didn't spare Mason Mount, commenting, "I'd probably sell him, and I like him—he's a great footballer. But he's never going to play in front of Bruno Fernandes, and he doesn't play enough games." He also tipped Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee for exits.
Despite Harry Maguire signing a new deal after a resurgence, Scholes questioned his quality for top-level success: "I think he's been sensational, but I'm thinking about a Manchester United team that wins the league and Champions League. I'm not sure you'd do that with Maguire unless you have someone like Rio Ferdinand next to him." He preferred Matthijs de Ligt due to youth and pace.
Implications for United's Future
Scholes' takedown highlights the urgent need for strategic changes at Old Trafford. As United aim to return to elite competition, tough decisions on player sales could define their summer transfer window and long-term ambitions.
