Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has criticised the club's structure following their humiliating Champions League exit. United finished bottom of their group with just four points, their lowest ever tally in the competition, after a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. The result means they failed to qualify for the Europa League, compounding a dismal European campaign.
Schmeichel, speaking to CBS Sports, said the club lacks a modern football structure. 'What we need is a structure that is fitting to modern day football so the constant people are not the managers or the coaches because we know they move on,' he said. He added that some signings have 'simply not been good enough' and that decisions need to be made above the manager.
The defeat saw United manage just five shots, one on target, and concede 15 goals in the group stage – the most by any Premier League side. Fans booed the team off, and pressure continues to mount on manager Erik ten Hag. However, Schmeichel believes Ten Hag can turn things around with structural changes from the top.
'I think Ten Hag can turn this around, he is well equipped,' Schmeichel said. 'It goes a lot deeper. It is structural at the football club.' He hopes the impending INEOS deal will bring new leadership and ideas. United face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, where they lost 7-0 last season.
