Scheffler's Family Commitment Overrides Masters Ambition
World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler has made a striking admission regarding his participation in the upcoming Masters tournament at Augusta National. The 29-year-old American, a two-time Masters champion, stated unequivocally that he would withdraw from the prestigious event if he received a single phone call from his wife Meredith indicating she had gone into labour with their second child.
Precedents of Family Prioritisation
This is not the first instance where Scheffler has placed family considerations above his professional golf career. Two years ago, while leading the Masters heading into the final round, the golfer had already formulated an exit strategy should his wife require him. "I definitely have a way to get home pretty quickly," Scheffler explained. "We have somebody here that has access to their cell phone, if that's all right. And, yes, I'll be available to go home then whenever I need to."
Despite Augusta National's strict policy prohibiting mobile phones on the course, Scheffler emphasised there would be no hesitation in his decision-making process. He reiterated this position to ESPN, declaring: "If she calls me while I'm on the 17th, then I better go home." Remarkably, Scheffler proceeded to card four-under-par in that final round to secure his second Masters title, with his son Bennett arriving several weeks later.
Current Preparations and Recent Form
Scheffler's preparation for this year's Masters has been somewhat disrupted by the impending birth. He recently withdrew from the Houston Open as Meredith approaches her due date, and has experienced inconsistent results in his last three tournaments, failing to achieve a top-ten finish. This contrasts with his dominant 2025 season, during which he claimed both the PGA Championship and Open Championship alongside four other PGA Tour victories.
The golfer began 2026 positively with a win at the Desert Classic and consecutive top-four finishes, though more recent performances at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship saw him finish tied for 24th and joint-22nd respectively. Despite these fluctuations, Scheffler remains the favourite to triumph at Augusta once again, where he previously secured victories in 2022 and 2024.
Personal Philosophy and Support System
Scheffler's perspective on balancing professional success with personal life has been significantly shaped by his wife's counsel. Following his 2022 Masters victory, he revealed the pivotal advice Meredith offered beforehand: "If you win this golf tournament today, if you lose this golf tournament by 10 shots, if you never win another golf tournament again, I'm still going to love you, you're still going to be the same person, Jesus loves you and nothing changes."
This philosophy underscores Scheffler's approach to the current situation. The family hopes to welcome their newborn before the Masters commences on April 9th, though Meredith is unlikely to attend the tournament in person. Scheffler's commitment highlights a broader narrative about athlete priorities, demonstrating that even at the pinnacle of professional sports, personal milestones can take precedence over championship pursuits.
The golfing world now watches with interest as Scheffler navigates this period of anticipation, balancing the demands of elite competition with the profound responsibilities of family life. His stance serves as a powerful reminder that beyond the greens and galleries, the most significant victories often occur away from the public eye.
